“We were initially expecting about 100 people,” said Brenda Moore, chair of the Food Sharing Project, speaking over the hum of the crowd and clatter of dishes. “We had to get rid of the dance floor to accommodate everyone, I think about 160 guests.”
The sold-out fundraiser brought together six of Kingston’s top chefs in support of The Food Sharing Project, a nonprofit that has quietly become a backbone of student nutrition across Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
The organization now delivers roughly $25,000 worth of food each week to 88 schools, ensuring students have access to free breakfasts, lunches and snacks.

“It’s a reality that kids are hungrier than they’ve ever been,” said Moore. “Schools are calling us and apologizing because they need more food. They’re running out by Wednesday and trying to get to Friday.”

The kitchen space inside Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School, which had been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, will now serve as a new space for The Food Sharing Project’s Lunch is Ready program. The charity provides nutritious food to schools across Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington, all of which is funded mainly through Canada’s National School Food Program.
The program currently serves lunch to eight elementary schools in Limestone District School Board and the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, as well as 13 other schools that also receive large pans of shareable meals, all of which is cooked in their commercial kitchen.
The new space allows the program to not only serve meals twice a week to students at the high school, but also St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School and Molly Brant Public School.
“With one in four families in KFL&A experiencing food insecurity, and the nutritional gap between what families can provide and what kids need to thrive is widening every day,” said Brenda Moore, the chair of The Food Sharing Project. “Kids really count on the food that we’re providing them at school, and a great example of that happened this winter. You’ll remember we had a lot of days where the school buses were canceled due to weather. Usually, the kids that walk to school, they stay home too on those days. But we heard from a couple of our schools that the numbers were down to start the day, but by late morning, Numbers were up. Kids were coming to school because that’s where lunch was.”

City of Kingston declares a food insecurity emergency: Appeal from Chair Brenda Moore
On January 14, 2025, Kingston City Council declared a food insecurity emergency in the city. Just prior to that, the South East Health Unit (formerly KFL&A Public Health) released their annual report on The Cost of Eating Healthy in KFL&A, reporting that 1 in 3 households in KFL&A lived with food insecurity in 2023. 1 in 3 households is devastating when we know it was 1 in 6 households in 2022 and 1 in 9 households in 2021. Read The Cost of Eating Healthy report to understand why no one is getting ahead.
When your family lives with food insecurity, the food your loved ones need to support good health is out of reach and you don’t know if there will even be enough food next week or next month.
Make a donation to The Food Sharing Project today and help us provide the nutritious food the children and youth who live in those 1 in 3 households experiencing food insecurity need to thrive. When they have access to good food at school, their parents and caregivers can redirect their limited income to pay the rent, the mortgage, or the utilities and put gas in the car to get to work.
The Food Sharing Project receives funding from the Ontario government through the Student Nutrition Program and that funding has not increased since 2014. If you can, please consider donating a portion of the $200 rebate cheque you will be receiving from the Ontario government. Your donation, no matter the amount, will go a long way to ensure that our kids have the nutritious food they need. Success starts with good food.
Thank you for your kind consideration of our request.
Warmly,
Brenda Moore
Chair, Board of Directors
The Food Sharing Project
P.S. Your donations up to Feb. 28, 2025, can be claimed on your 2024 personal income tax return.
