Leave a Legacy

What will your legacy be?

Leaving a legacy gift in your Will to The Food Sharing Project is an act of caring and compassion for your entire community. You can designate a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of your estate. Whatever form your gift takes the result is the same – providing healthy food to students who need nutrition, in a stigma-free, accessible environment and ultimately improving their readiness to learn.

Over the years, The Food Sharing Project has been able to invest in the future and plan for the long-term thanks to legacy gifts. Bequests have helped us fund critically important projects like the purchase of our second delivery vehicle or enhancing kitchen facilities in schools.

To include a bequest to The Food Sharing Project in your Will, you can simply have your lawyer add a codicil to your existing Will, or if you don’t yet have a Will, you can have a lawyer or notary prepare one for you that includes the bequest.

There are a few different options to consider:

Specific Bequest
You designate a specific dollar amount, or piece of property such as real estate, stocks, or bonds.
Residual Bequest
You donate all or a portion (percentage) of your Estate after all your debts, taxes, expenses, and other bequests have been paid.
Contingent Bequest
Your gift takes effect only if the primary intention cannot be met (for example, if the primary or alternate beneficiaries do not survive the donor).
Restricted vs Unrestricted

You may also indicate if you’d like your bequest gift to be unrestricted or restricted. Unrestricted gifts allow The Food Sharing Project to use your gift for their highest priority or most urgent needs. Restricted gifts are designated to a specific project or purpose and should include a “power to vary” clause. This clause gives authorization to the Board of Directors to use your donation for another purpose, aligned with the general intent of the gift, if the original project or purpose can no longer be carried out.

The Food Sharing Project also accepts funds from registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs and RRIFs), tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs) and gifts of life insurance, along with being eligible to accept grants from donor-advised funds.
